VAT compliance in e-commerce

PrintMailRate-it

If you sell goods online and store or deliver them to customers within the European Union, you will be required to register for VAT in Europe. Rödl & Partner assists enterprises in the registration process in Poland and other EU Member States (e.g. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary).

We provide assistance in the preparation of periodic tax returns and information returns, as well as in the fulfilment of legal obligations. Our experienced team of experts has the expertise your business needs to deal with cross-border VAT-related enquiries. We act as tax representatives of taxpayers from third countries.

Sale and storage of goods

If you sell goods to customers in Europe via Allegro, Amazon, eBay or a similar platform, or via your own website – you need to decide how to deliver the goods to the buyers, whether they will be shipped from your central warehouse or a warehouse leased from another entity. It is also important in which country this warehouse is located. If you store goods in one or more EU countries, you will need to register for VAT in each country where the goods are stored.
If the total sales of your goods to customers in other EU countries exceed certain thresholds, you will have to register for VAT in the country where your customers are located.

As a VAT-registered taxpayer in different countries, you will be subject to the requirements of those countries regarding:

  • issuing invoices with local VAT;
  • accounting for VAT in the country where you register for VAT;
  • filing local periodic VAT returns and information returns.

Depending on the adopted sales model, your accounts will look different.
