Update of Poland’s Energy Policy 2040

The Polish Council of Ministers adopted guidelines for the updated Poland's Energy Policy 2040 – also referred to as PEP2040 – on 29 March 2022.

The guidelines issued by the Minister of Climate and Environment are designed to strengthen Poland's energy security and independence. The objective is to eliminate or at least mitigate the risk connected with crisis situations at home and abroad.

The modified PEP2040 puts the Polish energy sector on the path to protect consumers from the growing energy prices caused by the new geopolitical situation. The policy also provides for quick independence from imported fossil fuels and derivatives, investment in production capacity, as well as alternative fuels.
 
The most important changes in PEP2040 include to:

• increase technological diversity and extend capacity based on domestic sources;
• speed up RES development;
• improve energy efficiency;
• further diversify supplies;
• ensure alternatives to hydrocarbons;
• use coal units;
• extend grid and energy storage;
• adjust decisions on investment in gas production capacity to fuel availability.
