The European Commission has inaugurated a new programme, the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP). The first calls for proposals for R&D and investment projects are now being launched in Poland as part of this initiative.

The grants to be distributed to companies comprise PLN 300 million for biotechnology development (R&D activities) and PLN 300 million for investments in the following areas (half for track A, half for track B).

Two lines of support – Innovation and Independence

The call for projects will follow two tracks:

  • Track A – Innovation: for R&D and investment projects that bring an innovative or state-of-the-art or breakthrough element with significant economic potential to the EU internal market (a combination of at least two of these elements is required). Calls for proposals are held from 22 July to 5 September for R&D projects and from 22 July to 9 September 2025 for investment projects.
  • Track B – Strategic Independence: for R&D and investment projects that contribute to reducing or combating the European Union's strategic dependence. Calls for proposals are held from 15 July to 29 August for R&D projects and from 22 July to 9 September 2025 for investment projects.

Support is available to individual companies or company consortia, research units or NGOs that carry out activities in the field of biotechnology.

Besides R&D projects, also infrastructure investments, such as construction of production lines or implementation of quality control systems, will be eligible for financing.

A stronger Europe means independent technology

The STEP initiative is the European Union's response to the strategic threats posed by over-dependence on external markets, particularly the USA and China. The programme is intended to support the development of three key areas: digital and deep tech, clean technologies and biotechnology.
